Igbokoda residents fear water pollution after deadly air force plane crash
A Nigerian Air Force plane crashed into a swamp near Igbokoda in Ondo State on 5 October, killing all 25 people on board.
Igbokoda’s traditional ruler says the swamp is also the community’s water source, used for drinking and household needs.
He fears decaying human remains and possible oil from the crash have polluted the water, which is also used for fishing and supports local livelihoods.
Rescue teams have recovered only body parts and pieces of the plane, while the main wreckage is believed to be deep in the swamp.
The search has been difficult because of the terrain, and rescuers say the site is hazardous and smells strongly of decay.

What people are saying
The pieces that have decayed left so much stench that is unbelievable.
Going close to the river is so scary now for children who usually go to swim when they return from school, because they see human flesh everywhere as they swim.
This same river where the plane crashed into is what supplies our drinking water.
The concern of everybody in this community today is that our government spent time, energy, money, and effort looking for people that had been chopped into pieces by the crash.
