Kapta Space raises $24 million to develop satellite radar for tracking moving targets
Seattle-based Kapta Space has raised $24 million in a Series A funding round, bringing its total financing to $30 million.
The company is developing satellite radar payloads designed to track moving targets over land, at sea and in the air.
Its system uses a different approach to steering radar beams, which Kapta says can reduce cost, power use and manufacturing complexity compared with traditional systems.
The company aims to make space-based radar easier to produce and deploy across large satellite constellations.
The new funding will support production and preparations for demonstration missions; the company says it expects to show the hardware in orbit within 24 to 36 months.
Kapta says its radar is intended to support classified missions and could also help track missiles during their mid-course flight.
The company’s program began before the proposed Golden Dome missile-defense shield and, according to its CEO, is meant for broader uses.

Kapta’s radar is designed to track targets across land, air and sea at lower cost, power use and complexity than traditional systems.
The sources differ on when Kapta was founded: GeekWire says 2023, while Payload says 2022.
