Anak Krakatau rises to alert status after eruptions

Anak Krakatau, a volcano in the Sunda Strait between Java and Sumatra, has become more active.

Indonesia’s Geological Agency raised its status from Level II, or Caution, to Level III, or Alert, from Oct.

9.

The agency recorded 14 eruptions between Oct.

6 and 9.

A disaster expert says an eruption does not automatically mean a tsunami will occur, and officials urged people on the coasts of Banten and Lampung to stay calm.

People are told to keep at least 5 kilometres from the eruption centre and 1 kilometre from two newly formed islands near the volcano.

Hazards include hot volcanic debris, heavy ash, lava and possible secondary eruptions when hot material meets water.

Residents can continue normal activities while following local disaster agency guidance, and the volcano’s status will be reviewed as activity changes.
