Foot-and-mouth disease detected in Namibia’s Zambezi Region
Namibia has detected foot-and-mouth disease in the Zambezi Region, the second area affected by the outbreak.
Veterinary officials found 20 cattle showing signs of the disease at Kalala Island on October 5, and all 12 samples tested positive two days later.
The outbreak was first confirmed in late September on a commercial farm in the southern Karasburg district.
Authorities have started emergency vaccination and surveillance to respond and assess how far the disease has spread.
Movement of cloven-hoofed animals and their raw products is suspended across the Zambezi Region, and livestock sales, gatherings and some slaughter have been halted.
The outbreak has also brought wider trade restrictions, including a temporary European Union suspension of imports of fresh beef, sheep and goat meat and some processed meat products from Namibia.
Namibia’s foot-and-mouth disease-free status has been suspended for the affected zone, while restrictions on animal movements and exports remain in place.
