Dermatologist links sleep, exercise and mitophagy to skin health

In a podcast conversation, dermatologist Mamina Turegano and interviewer Mark Hyman discussed how cells and skin may be affected by aging, inflammation, sun damage and poor diet.

They focused on mitophagy, a process that removes damaged mitochondria, the structures that help cells produce energy.

Turegano said damaged mitochondria can take up space and interfere with cell function.

She and Hyman connected sleep with the body's repair processes and discussed limiting processed foods, prolonged ultraviolet exposure and stress.

They also described strength training and other exercise as ways to support circulation and mitochondrial function.

The discussion included nutrients and compounds from foods, as well as urolithin A, which Turegano described as a supplement that targets mitophagy.

She said products containing it come in oral and skin-applied forms and that their doses should be checked.
