Mexico sets informant rewards of up to 60 million pesos

Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office will offer rewards for information that helps capture wanted people under new rules published in the government’s official gazette.

Payments will range from 100,000 to 60 million pesos, depending on the case.

A committee made up of officials from specialized prosecutor’s offices will assess each proposed reward and approve its amount.

It will consider the person’s position in a criminal organization, the importance of their activities and the social impact of the case.

Information must be verified and directly help an investigation for a payment to be considered.

Officials say informants’ names and identifying details will remain confidential.

If several people provide useful information, the committee can decide how to divide the reward among them.
