Bread Ahead faces losing its Borough Market stall after lease was not renewed

Bread Ahead, a bakery known for its doughnuts, may have to leave its stall at Borough Market in London.

The market has not renewed the bakery’s lease, saying it has grown too large and international for the site.

Bread Ahead began at Borough Market 13 years ago and now has seven branches in London and three overseas.

Its founder, Matthew Jones, says the business employs 83 full-time staff and runs a bakery school at the market.

The lease decision matters because the stall is where the business began and still draws large queues.

Jones says Bread Ahead is also preparing to open a branch in New York in mid-November.
