Yemen warns Taiz health services may fail as supplies run low

Yemen’s health ministry has warned that hospitals in the city of Taiz are close to running short of medicine, medical supplies and fuel.

The ministry blames an ongoing Houthi siege and blocked supply routes.

It says shortages could interrupt emergency care, surgery, intensive care, kidney dialysis and care for newborns.

Fuel shortages could also stop generators and ambulances and disrupt the cooling of medicines and vaccines.

Local residents say routes into the city are closed and that water, fuel and food are also scarce.

The ministry has urged the Houthis to lift the siege and allow safe passage for patients, health workers and aid.

It has also asked the United Nations and humanitarian and health groups to urgently deliver supplies, oxygen and fuel.

The ministry warns that delays could lead to services stopping and preventable deaths.
