Mine found near beach in South Korea prompts criticism of president

A landmine was found near Daebinchang Beach on Jumun Island, part of Ganghwa County in South Korea.

County officials said it was found on October 8 and was thought to have drifted in from North Korea.

Ahn Cheol-soo, a lawmaker with the People Power Party, said the mine threatened residents and visitors.

He criticized President Lee Jae-myung for not speaking publicly about the mine or a separate incident involving mines in the Demilitarized Zone.

Ahn called on Lee to take action against North Korea, suggesting measures including loudspeaker broadcasts and leaflet drops.

Ganghwa County said mines have been found 17 times in the county this year.

The account gives no response from Lee or indication of what action will follow.
