SpaceX launches 21 military satellites after five-day delay

SpaceX launched 21 data-transport satellites for the U.S. Space Force on a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

The launch took place on Oct.

10, five days later than planned, after an earlier countdown was aborted in its final minute.

The satellites are part of a U.S. military network designed to support communications and missile warning and tracking.

The network is being built in stages, called tranches, with new capabilities planned every two years.

The first stage is planned to include 154 operational satellites, including 126 for data transport and 28 for missile tracking.

This launch was the fourth of nine SpaceX flights planned to help complete that first stage; 84 of the 126 data-transport satellites had launched by then.

The rocket's booster landed back at Vandenberg, but satellite deployment had not yet been confirmed.
