Margaret Hamilton, whose software helped Apollo astronauts reach the Moon, dies at 90

Margaret Hamilton, an American software engineer, died on September 30 at age 90.

She led a team at MIT that developed onboard computer software for NASA’s Apollo missions.

Apollo 11 made the first crewed landing on the Moon in 1969.

During its descent, the guidance computer raised alarms because it was overloaded with tasks.

The software had safeguards that let essential landing work continue, and the crew landed safely.

Hamilton also pushed for protections against mistakes by astronauts, which were added after an astronaut triggered a program during an earlier mission.

Her work helped make the Apollo missions possible, and she later received the US Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016.

The sources do not describe any next steps.
