São Paulo Fashion Week opens its 61st edition with 24 shows

São Paulo Fashion Week begins Tuesday and runs through Sunday in Brazil’s largest city.

Its 61st edition includes 24 runway shows, with many at the Pavilhão das Culturas Brasileiras in Ibirapuera Park and others at venues around the city.

The event is marking the end of its 30th anniversary celebrations.

Organisers say the theme draws on symbols and allegorical ideas at a time of social change, rather than offering a strongly optimistic vision of the future.

An exhibition at the pavilion brings together work by 12 artists and focuses on Brazilian imagery, including Afro-Brazilian and Indigenous perspectives.

The edition follows Rio Fashion Week, held in April, and is the first time São Paulo Fashion Week is taking place annually.

Its founder says the event must be rebuilt to reflect the world as it is today.
