New art fair and nonprofit space add momentum to Kuala Lumpur’s art scene

Kuala Lumpur is gaining two new platforms for contemporary art: the Art KL fair and the Muara Arts nonprofit space.

Art KL is scheduled for October 15–18 at a repurposed heritage printing factory, with ten regional galleries showing Southeast Asian artists born after 1990.

Its curated section will feature eight Malaysian artists, and proceeds will go to The Lighthouse Children’s Welfare Home.

Muara Arts is due to open in November in a renovated shophouse with a show featuring more than 40 Southeast Asian artists, including Pacita Abad and Marcos Kueh.

The projects respond to limited opportunities for emerging artists in a country with many artists but relatively little cultural infrastructure.

Muara plans to hold two exhibitions a year, and an adjacent theatre is due to open in 2029.

Together with other recent cultural projects, the new spaces reflect a growing arts scene in Malaysia.
