Prado opens first exhibition of artist Ricardo de Madrazo's work

The Prado Museum in Madrid has opened an exhibition of Ricardo de Madrazo's work.

Ricardo, who lived from 1852 to 1917, was a painter and draughtsman from a prominent Spanish artistic family.

His father was Federico de Madrazo, his brother was Raimundo de Madrazo, and his brother-in-law was Mariano Fortuny, whom Ricardo learned from.

His work was overshadowed by his better-known relatives despite a career spanning nearly half a century.

The exhibition includes sketchbooks, drawings, watercolors, a self-portrait and personal documents.

Some drawings record Fortuny's studio shortly after his death and show details of everyday life and work in 19th-century Spain.

The show gives visitors their first chance to see Ricardo's work and explores his travels, artistic training, portrait work and family life.

It is open in the Prado's Villanueva building until January 17, 2027.

He is an artist who does not enter or leave the canon, but is in the shadow of other great artists. He is in the canon, but I want you to understand that he has been overshadowed by his family.
