Tests show AI models could carry out attacks on industrial systems

Booz Allen tested two advanced AI models in a lab designed to resemble a manufacturing facility.

The models completed all eight simulated attack scenarios, which involved finding weaknesses and reaching industrial equipment.

In one test, a model found and moved a robotic arm within minutes; in another, it reached an industrial control network in just over 16 minutes.

The systems tested included equipment used to control factory operations, such as programmable controllers and a SCADA platform.

Industrial systems can help run services such as water and power, so attacks on them could affect daily life.

The tests included human approval before actions that could cause physical effects, and they did not identify the AI models.

Booz Allen says defenders may have only minutes to respond to a fast attack and wants more testing and stronger cyber defenses for industrial networks.
