Japan’s beer-category sales rose 2% in September ahead of tax changes
Sales of beer and similar drinks in Japan rose 2% in September from a year earlier, the first increase in three months.
The rise was driven mainly by happoshu, a lower-tax beer-like drink, as shoppers bought it before its tax rate increased on October 1.
Happoshu sales rose 12%, while sales of third-category beer fell 5% despite a planned tax increase.
Suntory was shifting its Kinmugi brand from third-category beer to beer in October, so retailers focused on securing the new version and ordered less of the old one.
Retailers also held back orders because tax rules required adjustments on alcohol already in distribution when the new rates took effect.
Sales for home use, including canned beer, rose 3%, but sales to restaurants and bars fell 4% amid poor weather.
The sales figures cover Japan’s four major brewers, which are also under a Fair Trade Commission investigation over suspected coordination of beer prices.

The increase was driven by a rush to buy happoshu ahead of an October tax change that raised its tax rate.
Happoshu sales rose 12%, while sales of third-category beer fell 5%, partly because retailers limited orders and Suntory’s Kinmugi was due to switch to beer.
