Japan becomes India’s top source of FDI in first quarter of FY27
Japan was the largest source of foreign direct investment in India from April to June 2026, the first quarter of India’s 2026-27 fiscal year.
The $5.71 billion from Japan made up nearly 29% of India’s total equity inflows of $19.81 billion in that quarter.
A major factor was MUFG Bank’s April deal to buy a 20% stake in Shriram Finance for about $4.4 billion.
The transaction was the largest cross-border investment in India’s financial services sector.
Japan has committed to investing 10 trillion yen in India over a decade, and Indian officials say Japanese companies have already invested about Rs 1 lakh crore toward that target.
Japanese investment is also expanding beyond manufacturing into areas such as financial services, technology, construction and logistics.
India and Japan have identified fields including semiconductors, batteries, energy and next-generation mobility for future cooperation.
