Japan cruise companies target younger travellers with shorter, cheaper trips

Japanese shipping and entertainment companies are introducing shorter, lower-cost cruises to attract travellers beyond the traditional market of affluent retirees.

The new Mitsui Ocean Sakura, unveiled in Yokohama, is Japanese-flagged and can offer domestic trips lasting one to three nights.

Japan’s cruise market is small: about 240,000 people from Japan took cruises in 2025, out of roughly 37 million worldwide.

A government survey found that many people who had never cruised pointed to high prices or the need for long holidays as barriers.

The government aims to increase the number of Japanese cruise travellers to 1 million by 2030.

Oriental Land, which operates Tokyo Disneyland, plans to start a Disney cruise service in Japan in fiscal 2028, with two- to four-night trips from ports near Tokyo.

Cruise ships could also bring visitors to areas with limited transport or accommodation, potentially supporting regional tourism.
