Australia’s largest egg supplier and 11 others face cartel allegations

Australia’s competition watchdog has launched Federal Court action against the country’s largest egg producer, Sunny Queen, and 11 other suppliers.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission alleges the suppliers coordinated business decisions from at least October 2020.

These decisions allegedly covered how many eggs to produce, distribution, expansion plans and culling birds to manage perceived oversupply.

The watchdog says the conduct likely reduced competition for many years.

It says the alleged coordination affected the supply of eggs to Australian consumers and may have contributed to higher prices.

The claims have not been proven in court.

The case will now proceed in the Federal Court.
