Most breast cancer cases occur in women over 50, Brazil’s cancer institute says
Breast cancer risk rises with age, and about four in five cases occur after age 50, according to Brazil’s National Cancer Institute.
The disease has no single cause, and risk can also be linked to hormone exposure, reproductive history, lifestyle, environmental conditions and genetics.
Some factors associated with longer exposure to hormones include early menstruation, late menopause and hormone therapy after menopause.
In Brazil’s public health system, about 51% of breast cancer cases were diagnosed at stages 3 or 4.
The share diagnosed at an advanced stage was highest among women aged 20 to 29, at 68.3%; among women aged 50 to 69, it was 47.6%.
Warning signs can include a persistent or hard breast lump, nipple discharge, skin or nipple changes, or small lumps in the neck or armpits.
The institute advises women to notice changes in their breasts and seek a health service if a change persists.
