How attention helped transform neural networks and modern AI
In 2014, researcher Dzmitry Bahdanau was working on English-to-French translation at the University of Montreal.
Neural networks struggled with long sentences because they had to compress each sentence into a fixed amount of memory before translating it.
Bahdanau, working with Yoshua Bengio and Kyunghyun Cho, developed a method called attention that improved translation of long sentences.
Other researchers adopted the method, and in 2017 a Google team built a transformer architecture around it.
The team said transformers produced leading translation results with much less computing than earlier models needed.
Large language models such as ChatGPT and Claude came later, and the story asks whether attention is central to intelligence, though it does not settle that question.
A 2014 neural-network translation project led to an attention method that helped improve translations of long sentences.
Dzmitry Bahdanau developed the approach with Yoshua Bengio and Kyunghyun Cho at a University of Montreal lab.
In 2017, a Google team introduced the transformer architecture, built around attention.
The transformer paper reported state-of-the-art translation with a fraction of the computation required by earlier models.
Transformers later underpinned large language models such as ChatGPT and Claude.
- Who
- Dzmitry Bahdanau, Yoshua Bengio and Kyunghyun Cho developed the attention method. A Google team later devised the transformer architecture.
- What
- Attention helped neural networks translate long sentences. A transformer architecture later built on attention and helped shape modern AI.
- When
- Bahdanau worked on the method in 2014; Google introduced the transformer in 2017.
- Where
- The initial work took place at a University of Montreal lab.
- Why
- Earlier neural networks struggled with long sentences because they had to fit sentence data into a fixed amount of memory.
This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
It was just obviously the right thing to do — one of these things that happens once in a while in science where it’s just very clear to someone who is not very experienced in the field
And it just worked. From the very first attempt.
Bahdanau worked with Bengio and Cho on neural-network translation from English to French.
A Google team introduced the transformer architecture in its paper, “Attention Is All You Need.
ChatGPT’s release was followed by wider attention to AI, including large language models.
