Thieves steal 30,000 bottles of wine worth €5 million in Tuscany

At least seven thieves stole 30,000 bottles of wine from Marchesi Antinori's site in Cortona, Tuscany, using two trucks.

The bottles, worth about €5 million, included the 2023 vintages of Solaia, Tignanello and Guado al Tasso.

The theft happened overnight between 3 and 4 October, and staff discovered it on Monday.

The thieves reportedly disabled alarms and cameras, and seemed to know which wines to take and where they were stored.

Marchesi Antinori, founded in 1385, says the haul is the largest wine theft in Italy's history.

Each bottle has a traceable lot number, making it difficult to sell so many without drawing attention; buyers could also face a complaint for receiving stolen goods.

The winery has alerted customers around the world, and its chief executive hopes road cameras in Tuscany will help trace the trucks.
