Egypt’s current account deficit widens to $22.5 billion

Egypt’s current account deficit reached $22.5 billion in the 2025-26 financial year, compared with $15.4 billion the year before.

The Central Bank of Egypt said the deficit grew because gaps in trade in goods and investment income both widened.

Egypt’s financial year runs from July 1 to June 30.

Some sources of foreign currency increased: foreign direct investment inflows reached $18 billion, tourism revenue was $18.4 billion, and money sent home by Egyptians abroad rose to $47.3 billion.

Suez Canal revenue also increased, to $4.4 billion.

Imports of petroleum products fell by $1.2 billion, while natural gas imports rose by $4.7 billion.

The figures show that gains in these foreign-currency earnings did not prevent the overall current account deficit from widening.
