Italian exports prove resilient despite energy costs and global disruption

Italian companies have kept selling goods abroad despite energy costs, geopolitical tensions and disruption to trade routes.

Italy’s energy prices are about 30% above the European Union average, raising costs for exporters and putting pressure on their profits and competitiveness.

A Promos Italia white paper traces the country’s exports from 2021 to 2026 using data from several institutions.

In 2022, exports exceeded €626 billion in value, partly because prices rose, but export volumes fell in 2023 and 2024.

In 2025, exports grew in both value and volume, surpassing €643 billion.

In the first seven months of the year, goods exports were up 4.6% from the same period a year earlier.

The paper says companies used pricing and diversification to protect revenue and market position, and that the next challenge is to make these responses lasting.
