Bardella antisemitism allegations test National Rally's rebrand

Jordan Bardella, leader of France's National Rally, is facing allegations over purported antisemitic and conspiratorial comments in online chats from his teenage years.

He calls the messages fake and says he will file defamation lawsuits.

The party has rallied around him, even though Bardella previously withdrew support for candidate Joseph Martin after a post by Martin was called seemingly antisemitic.

Martin says Bardella should face the same standard, but the party later allowed Martin to run after deciding his post was not antisemitic.

The dispute challenges the National Rally's effort to distance itself from antisemitism associated with its past and its founder, Jean-Marie Le Pen.

An IFOP poll found that 74% of French people consider the messages problematic if true, while 21% said the allegations had worsened their view of Bardella.

The scandal may matter most in a presidential election run-off, where Marine Le Pen could need voters beyond the party's usual supporters.
