Union calls for action after 14-year-old shoots school staff in Aubagne

A 14-year-old student used a hunting rifle to shoot the principal and a teacher at a school in Aubagne, in southern France.

Both staff members were wounded.

Maxime Reppert, a national vice-president of the SNALC teachers’ union, said the union had raised concerns about the problem for months and years.

He criticised what he described as a lack of political action, despite education and interior ministers visiting the school after the shooting.

Metal detectors at school entrances have been debated in France, but their use at all schools has not been adopted.

Reppert said detectors alone would not solve the problem and pointed to parental responsibility, staff authority, school supervision and young people’s mental health.

He did not set out a specific next step.
