Rural students in Saint-Girons protest school conditions and lack of support

Students at a high school in Saint-Girons, in the mountain region of Ariège in southern France, are joining a wider wave of high-school protests.

They say they feel overlooked because rural students are fewer and farther from decision-makers in Paris and Toulouse.

Their complaints include classrooms that are too cold and shower doors that they say have been awaited for five years.

Some students also face long and difficult journeys, which can make their school day run from 6:15 a.m.

to 6:30 p.m.

They want school schedules to account for travel and say rural students have fewer resources and less representation.

They are also calling for Parcoursup, France’s higher-education admissions platform, to be abolished, saying distance makes choices about what to study harder, especially for poorer students.

A day of demonstrations is planned for Tuesday, October 13.

What people are saying

We are always put aside, so we try to make as much noise as possible, to make ourselves heard in a legal way or not, as long as it is legitimate, that is fine with us.

It can happen that we have days from 6:15 in the morning to 18:30 in the evening. The brain can no longer keep up.
