Experts recommend sardines for nutrients linked to brain and bone health

Sardines provide protein, omega-3 fats, calcium and several vitamins and minerals.

Longevity doctor Rodrigo Arteaga recommends eating them two or three times a week to support brain function.

The omega-3 fats DHA and EPA are involved in brain cell membranes and nerve signalling.

Doctor David Céspedes says sardines also provide nutrients that support bones and muscles, including calcium from the bones if they are eaten and vitamin D. Canned sardines retain high-quality protein, but those packed in oil contain more fat than fresh sardines.

Research cited by the Spanish food science institute CSIC found that canning does not significantly reduce calcium when the bones are eaten.

The recommendations are about including sardines in a diet; no specific outcome from eating them regularly is established here.
