Mônica Zarattini’s book traces her father’s persecution under military dictatorship
Brazilian photojournalist Mônica Zarattini has written a book about her father, former federal deputy Ricardo Zarattini, who was persecuted during the country’s military dictatorship.
The book, titled “Meu Pai é Viajante,” combines photographs and writing about her childhood and teenage years from 1969 to 1979.
Zarattini draws on family letters and photographs, as well as files from Deops, a state political and social order department.
She says she received an incomplete and veiled account of her father’s story while growing up.
The book brings family memories together with Brazil’s political history, while also examining what remained uncertain or was shaped by a child’s imagination.
It is scheduled to launch on Thursday at Lovely House Casa de Livros in central São Paulo, where Zarattini will also take part in a conversation with the editors.
