China starts more major water projects in first nine months than all of last year

China has started more major water projects in the first nine months of this year than it did during all of last year.

The projects are part of an accelerated effort to build a national water network.

In Hubei, work has entered its main construction stage on an upgrade to shipping facilities at the Gezhouba Dam.

In Fujian, the Shangbaishi water project is under construction and is expected to reduce flood risk for more than 600,000 people in eastern Fujian.

Work has also begun on flood-control improvements at the Tiaoxi River in the Taihu Lake basin, aimed at protecting the Hangzhou-Jiaxing-Huzhou plain.

Separately, 2,012 rural water-supply projects have been completed this year.

By the end of the year, the share of rural residents with access to tap water is expected to reach 97%.
