India’s renewable power generation tops 100 billion units in a quarter
India generated 101 billion units of electricity from renewable sources, excluding large hydropower, in July-September 2026, the first time the total passed 100 billion in a quarter.
The period was the second quarter of India’s 2026-27 financial year.
Generation from all non-fossil sources, including renewables, hydropower and nuclear power, reached a record 177 billion units.
Solar power made up 10 per cent of all electricity generated, while solar and wind generation rose 39 per cent and 29 per cent respectively from a year earlier.
Total electricity generation rose 11 per cent to 536 billion units, and peak demand reached a record 270 gigawatts.
Even so, coal power plants used only 68 per cent of their available capacity, and coal stocks at power plants were 21 million tonnes on September 30, below the stated normative requirement of 58 million tonnes.
A CREA analyst said plans for new thermal capacity should account for expected demand, renewable generation and storage availability.
