Man’s body found in Toulouse morgue after nearly 14 years
Michel Meynard’s body was found in a Toulouse hospital morgue in early October, after nearly 14 years in a refrigerated room.
Meynard, 58, was from Gironde and lived in Castelnau-d’Auzan, a village in the Gers region of southwestern France.
He died alone at home in November 2012, and his body was sent to Toulouse for an autopsy before the town hall recorded his death.
When the hospital asked the town to arrange a burial because it thought he had no family, local officials believed he had relatives and asked the hospital to look for them.
The body was never claimed or buried, and the available accounts do not explain exactly why the follow-up failed.
The discovery came during checks of the hospital’s morgue after two newborns’ bodies and two fetuses were found in a medical-waste container there.
The town now wants him to have a proper burial, while investigations into the earlier discovery are ongoing.
Michel Meynard’s body was found in early October in a refrigerated room at the morgue of Toulouse-Rangueil hospital, where it had remained for nearly 14 years.
The articles say he died in November 2012, aged 58, in Castelnau-d’Auzan, a village in the Gers.
His body had been taken to Toulouse for an autopsy, and the municipality was later asked to arrange his burial because he appeared to have no family.
The village says it asked the hospital to search for relatives because it believed he had them; the sources do not explain how the body was ultimately left in storage.
The discovery followed checks of refrigerated rooms and judicially sealed items after human remains were found in a medical-waste container at the hospital.

What people are saying
We therefore urged the hospital to search for his relatives, because that is not our responsibility.
We thought the body had been claimed, that he had been buried somewhere else.
