Truck collision on BR-116 in São Leopoldo causes hours of delays
Two trucks carrying steel coils collided on BR-116 in São Leopoldo, in Brazil’s Rio Grande do Sul state, on Tuesday morning.
The crash happened at kilometer 242 on the road from Porto Alegre toward the interior, during a Federal Highway Police inspection.
Police said they had signaled the front truck to pull over, and the truck behind it hit its rear while slowing.
Police blamed the rear driver’s lack of attention and safe distance, while that driver said the sudden slowdown left too little time to brake.
The crash badly damaged the rear truck’s cab and left it partly blocking the right lane.
One account said the driver was well, though official information on injuries had not been released.
The blocked lane caused hours of traffic delays until the damaged truck was removed and the lane reopened at about 2:30 p.m.; police were still gathering information about the collision.
