Congress protesters in Hubballi demand election chief’s resignation

Congress workers held a protest in Hubballi, in Karnataka, on October 11, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

They accused the BJP-led Union Government of trying to manipulate votes and said electoral rights were under threat.

The claims were made by the protesters and were not established in the account of the event.

The rally began with a reading of Article 326 of India’s Constitution, which provides for elections based on adult suffrage.

A scuffle broke out near the Hubballi-Dharwad Municipal Corporation office after protesters allegedly tried to burn portraits of Kumar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.

Police detained several demonstrators; no further action or response from the election chief was reported.
