Mahisha Mandalotsava celebrated in Mysuru under tight police security

The Mahisha Mandalotsava was held at Town Hall in Mysuru, Karnataka, on the day before Dasara celebrations began.

Organisers, including former Mayor Purushotham, garlanded a statue of B.R. Ambedkar and lit a candle before miniatures of Ambedkar, Buddha and Mahishasura.

The event took place under tight police security.

Speakers argued that Mahisha should be understood as a historical ruler rather than as the demon portrayed in mythology.

Historian P.V. Nanjaraj Urs said Chamundi Hill was previously called Mahabala Betta, and writer K.S. Bhagavan discussed Ambedkar’s socialistic ideas.

Organisers also released a book about Mahisha written by Vittal Vaggan.

Police had issued orders restricting access near the Mahishasura statue on Chamundi Hill from October 9 to the early hours of October 11; Purushotham said the organisers had also garlanded that statue and thanked the state Home Minister for intervening.
