ICE officer shoots man in New York’s Marble Hill neighborhood

An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot Oscar Belgal, 28, during an operation in Marble Hill, a neighborhood considered part of Manhattan but geographically in the Bronx.

Belgal was wounded in the neck and survived; his five-year-old son was in the car and was not hurt.

Federal officials say Belgal accelerated into government vehicles and toward officers, who fired because they feared for safety.

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said officers did not know the child was in the car.

New York residents described fear and anger, and city and state leaders called for an investigation and an end to violent federal immigration enforcement.

Belgal was treated in hospital and then taken to an ICE facility in another state, while his son was placed with relatives.

Police released body-camera footage showing Belgal’s arrest after the shooting, but footage from ICE officers has not been made public.
