Study identifies Sardinian village as a possible hotspot for women reaching 100

A study has identified Bolotana, a remote village in Sardinia, as a possible hotspot for women living to 100 and beyond.

The village has about 2,300 residents, and all six of its surviving centenarians are women.

The study estimates that women in their 70s there have a 13.8 per cent chance of reaching 100, compared with 3.5 per cent for women across Italy.

The study says only Hong Kong has a higher rate of female longevity.

Sardinia is already known for areas where unusually large numbers of men reach 100, but Bolotana stands out for its women.

The mayor points to a diet rich in grains, vegetables, fruit, olive oil, potatoes and pasta, though the story does not establish a single cause for the residents’ longevity.

The mayor says two more residents are expected to turn 100 in the coming months and hopes the village’s reputation will attract tourists and new residents.
