EU budget proposal cuts €159 billion from commission plan

The EU is negotiating its seven-year budget for 2028 to 2034.

Ireland’s proposal would cut €159 billion from the European Commission’s original plan.

It would make bigger cuts to areas such as research, defence and competitiveness, while largely protecting agriculture and regional support.

Some major EU contributors say the proposal is still too expensive, so it may not speed up talks.
