Media attention in France’s student protests favors articulate young spokespeople

France’s high school protests have produced several prominent young voices.

Elwan, 17, became widely known after a video of him confronting a far-right online commentator on 4 October drew nearly 10 million views on X. He later appeared on television and called on media to give more attention to young people from poorer suburbs.

Louise Montangon, a 22-year-old National Rally activist, has also been prominent, including in a televised argument with Elwan.

Seydou Ba, a 17-year-old student organizer in Rosny-sous-Bois, gets less television attention despite having 110,000 TikTok followers and leading school blockades.

The contrast echoes 1968, when student protester Daniel Cohn-Bendit became its best-known face.

The pattern favors young people who speak with ease and use language familiar to journalists, many of whom come from privileged backgrounds.

Elwan says his visibility may fade with the protest trend, but whether he will remain a public figure is uncertain.
