French minister says extra education spending must be funded by savings elsewhere
France plans €1.2 billion in extra education funding for next year, as high school students call for €10 billion to improve schools.
Education minister David Amiel said students' demands also include issues such as school schedules, teacher replacements and the Parcoursup admissions system, which do not directly require more spending.
Amiel said any further funding must be matched by savings elsewhere.
He argued that some parties claiming to support young people had backed votes that, in his view, worsened the public deficit by €8 billion.
Parliament will debate possible extra savings and spending as it considers the 2027 budget.
The government says education is the civil budget area receiving the largest increase in its initial proposal.
Amiel also said diesel prices are expected to fall from November 1 as strategic fuel stocks are used, with those stocks due to be replenished next year.
French Public Accounts Minister David Amiel said any extra education spending would have to be funded by savings elsewhere.
He said the government’s proposed 2027 budget includes an additional 1.2 billion euros for education.
High school students are calling for 10 billion euros to bring schools up to standard.
Amiel said parliamentary debate could consider how to find further savings.
He criticized parties he said had opposed measures requiring retirees to make financial contributions.
