Keralam Assembly opens nine-day session amid political disputes

Keralam’s State Legislative Assembly begins a nine-day session on October 12, with breaks before it ends on October 29.

The United Democratic Front government plans to introduce a bill promising legal guarantees for elderly people and seek the return of a private-universities bill for the Assembly to reconsider.

Members are also expected to consider two other bills, including one on court fees.

Opposition members are likely to challenge the government over monsoon power cuts and Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan’s chartered flight to disaster-hit areas, which he has defended.

A High Court order directing that an FIR be registered against Opposition Leader Pinarayi Vijayan and two others in the CMRL-Exalogic case is also expected to feature in debate.

The session comes amid nationwide protests calling for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s removal and debate over changes to electoral rolls.

The Assembly’s Business Advisory Committee is due to meet on Monday to settle further legislative business.
