Activated protein C improves blood stem cell transplantation in mice
Blood stem cells can lose some of their ability to make new blood cells when prepared for treatment.
Researchers found that a brief treatment with activated protein C helped keep the cells in a protected, resting state.
In tests in mice, treated human cells made more blood cells and continued working after repeat transplants.
The approach could eventually help improve transplants and gene therapies for blood disorders.
