Turkey’s ruling party spokesperson rebukes opposition leader over Erdoğan remarks

Ömer Çelik, spokesperson for Turkey’s ruling AK Party, criticized opposition leader Özgür Özel over remarks about President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

Çelik said Özel was not qualified to judge Erdoğan’s leadership and called his comments improper.

He also accused Özel and others of using false claims to target political figures.

At the same time, Çelik said allegations should be investigated regardless of who is involved, rather than covered up for political reasons.

He urged anyone with evidence to take it to prosecutors.

Çelik also said a government fund board had held its fourth meeting and was making decisions about returning money to citizens whose rights had been violated.

The dispute highlights tensions between the governing party and the opposition over political criticism and allegations of wrongdoing.
