African Union launches its own credit rating agency

The African Union launched the Africa Credit Rating Agency, or AfCRA, on Oct.

7 in Mauritius.

The agency is headquartered in Port Louis, the country’s capital.

African countries with debt often struggle to attract investment and have blamed unfair ratings by Moody’s, Fitch and S&P.

AfCRA aims to improve how international financial markets assess African governments, regional authorities and businesses.

It plans to use better data, expertise and understanding of local conditions to assess African credit risk.

Its success will depend largely on whether it produces accurate ratings.
