Algeria arrests 61 Moroccans over alleged sabotage plans

Algerian authorities say they arrested 61 Moroccan nationals earlier in October on suspicion of planning acts of sabotage.

The group included a former Moroccan army soldier, according to Algeria’s General Directorate of National Security.

Authorities said the suspects entered Algeria from Tunisia by mountain trails.

They described the group as an international Moroccan criminal network but did not explain what the alleged plans involved.

The arrests come amid longstanding tensions between Algeria and Morocco.

Their shared land border has been closed since 1994, and Algeria severed diplomatic relations in 2021.

The countries also disagree over Western Sahara: Morocco controls much of the territory, while Algeria supports the Polisario Front and its call for self-determination.

No further steps in the case were reported.
