Durham police warn of online group coercing children into harmful acts

Durham Regional Police warn of threats linked to an online network they call “The Com,” also known as the Community.

The group’s primary targets are children and youth aged 8 to 17, contacted through platforms including Discord, Telegram, Snapchat, Roblox and Minecraft.

Police say the predators use friendship, romance, fear or threats to manipulate young people and keep them silent.

Some victims are pressured into hoax emergency calls, online attacks or other harmful acts, including self-harm or violence toward others.

Police have responded to several incidents they believe may be linked to the group, and say multiple changes in a child’s behaviour could be a reason to act.

Parents and caregivers are urged to talk openly with children about their online contacts and what they share; suspected safety risks can be reported to Durham police at 1-888-579-1520.
