Turkey urges global action on energy security and climate ahead of COP31

Turkey’s Energy Minister, Alparslan Bayraktar, spoke about energy policy and COP31 at a congress in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

He said Turkey wants the conference, which it will host, to encourage global action on electrification, energy security and climate change.

Electricity demand in Turkey is rising, driven in part by data centres, cooling needs and electric transport.

The country also depends on imported energy, which Bayraktar described as a concern amid disruption to global energy markets.

Turkey is investing in renewable energy, energy efficiency, nuclear power and other areas as it pursues a 2053 net-zero emissions goal.

It aims to have 20 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity by 2050 and is also considering energy links and pipeline projects with neighbouring countries.

Bayraktar said energy security must be addressed alongside climate action, and hopes COP31 will help strengthen international cooperation.
