Paris court upholds limits on treatment for toddler with severe brain injuries

An 18-month-old boy was taken to Necker hospital in Paris after accidentally swallowing drain cleaner containing caustic soda in May 2026.

He had several operations, including a tracheostomy and a feeding tube.

During surgery on July 29, he suffered a cardiac arrest lasting about 30 minutes, and an MRI later showed widespread brain injuries.

Doctors judged his neurological outlook to be very poor and decided to limit some treatments, while continuing other care.

The boy’s parents opposed that decision and pointed to signs of responsiveness they believed showed improvement.

A neurologist asked by the Paris administrative court agreed with the hospital team, and the court upheld the decision, finding that some further treatment would be unreasonable.

The family has one month to appeal.
