South Korea media watchdog pledges faster action on deepfake and illegal content

Ko Gwang-heon, head of South Korea’s Broadcasting, Media and Communications Review Commission, outlined the plans at a parliamentary audit on Oct.

12.

The commission reviews media and online content and says it must protect people while also respecting freedom of expression and users’ rights.

Ko said AI-enabled criminal content is spreading quickly, including illegal filmed material and deepfake sexual abuse videos.

He said the commission would use ongoing monitoring, faster reviews and cooperation with agencies and businesses in South Korea and abroad to respond.

It also aims to make overseas platforms more effective at removing or blocking illegal content, including material involving drugs, gambling and illegal finance.

The commission plans to update its review systems and its operation of a dispute-resolution process, while making its standards and procedures clearer and more transparent.
