Ank Theatre marks 50 years with a play about warrior queen Abbakka

Ank Theatre Group, founded in 1976 to promote Hindi theatre in India, is marking its 50th year with a new play about Veera Rani Abbakka.

The play tells the story of Abbakka, a warrior queen of Ullala, a coastal principality near Mangaluru.

In the story, she vows to avenge her mother’s defeat by the Portuguese.

Priita Mathur Thakur wrote and directed the production and plays Abbakka.

She took over the group after her husband, Ank founder Dinesh Thakur, died in 2012.

The production is Ank’s 88th and began its Mumbai run at INT Aditya Birla Theatre and Prithvi Theatre.

It is scheduled to play in Mumbai on October 18 and in Thane on October 24, with a performance in Bhopal planned for December.

The group also hopes to take the play to Mangaluru.
